Dallas Stars Trade Sergei Gonchar

After plenty of talk and months of rumors, Jim Nill has finally managed to make a trade that will see 40 year-old defenseman Sergei Gonchar heading to the Montreal Canadiens.

Nill announced early today that Gonchar had been traded to the Canadiens in exchange for 32 year-old left wing Travis Moen. Moen has a career total of 125 points and 766 penalty minutes in a total of 690 regular season games thus far. He has 19 points in 77 playoff games and won the Stanley Cup in 2007 as a member of the Anaheim Ducks. In 10 games this season, Moen has yet to record a point.  Gonchar has one point in three games with the Dallas Stars this season.

“Travis is a proven forward that does all the gritty things needed to win,” said Nill. “He brings leadership and experience to our forward group and will be an important part of our penalty kill.”

This trade frees up about $3.2 million for the Dallas Stars, something that could come in handy, especially with the rocky start the Stars have been off to this season.

“We would like to thank Sergei Gonchar for his commitment to the organization and his help in developing our young defensemen. We wish him and his family the best.”
