Morrow Chooses Pittsburgh

With the battle of Pennsylvania set to take place in mere hours, the Pittsburgh Penguins are making headlines. The club’s stellar skill and grit is not the focus—rather general manager Ray Shero’s intent to secure Brenden Morrow is the hot topic.

It was reported that a deal between the Penguins and Dallas Stars was a go, pending the waiving of Morrow’s no trade clause. Morrow joins a Penguins roster with two familiar faces—forward James Neal and defenseman Matt Niskanen were also dealt from the Stars to the Penguins in 2011. The trade has paid enormous dividends for the Penguins, who have risen to the apex of the Eastern Conference with a record of 24-8-0 and 48 points.

In exchange for Morrow, the Penguins will send twenty-year old defensive prospect Joe Morrow of the Portland Winterhawks (no relation) to the Stars. He was drafted twenty-third overall at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

The trade bodes well for the mighty Penguins. Morrow, with his grit, skill, and experience, will only augment the Penguins’ chances of raising the Stanley Cup. Registering only five goals and six assists this season, Morrow is not expected to provide offense. It is assumed that Morrow will join James Neal on the Evgeni Malkin line—which would give him the role of fending off defensemen in order to create space for the two scoring superstars.
