Sweden Edges Czech Republic to Open 2015 World Championships

May 1 marks the beginning of the preliminary round of the IIHF World Championships and Sweden defeated Czech Republic on home ice.

After giving up a two goal lead going into the third period, the game was forced in to a shootout. With several players scoring in regulation (5-5 going into OT/Shootout), the game was ultimately decided by Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s shootout goal.

Jhonas Enroth made 23 saves on 28 shots on goal, while Alexander Salak only had 19 saves on 25 shots.

With Joel Lundqvist, Staffan Kronwall, Victor Rask, Joakim Lindstrom and Mattias Sjogren all tallying a goal in regulation, Team Sweden is off to a decent start in the prelims.

After giving up the lead and managing to fall 5-4 in the third, the Swedes managed to pull through on a goal during a 6-on-4 power play.

This game might serve as a wake up call for both teams, as the Swedes are hoping to medal again and the Czechs are shooting for redemption after being defeated by Sweden for the bronze last year.

Next games for Sweden are Sunday vs Austria and Monday vs Latvia.

I am quite the fan of Sweden, their language and hockey team alike. I'm also that person who will chase down anyone with NHL paraphernalia... I just really like hockey.
