Winnipeg Jets Re-Sign Michael Frolik

The Winnipeg Jets have agreed to terms with forward Michael Frolik on a one-year, 3.3 million dollar contract. Frolik was a restricted free agent whose arbitration hearing was set for Thursday.

The 26-year-old Czech Republican was a Stanley Cup Champion with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013 but later traded to the Jets for draft picks that same offseason. Frolik was a instrumental piece to the Blackhawks’ stellar penalty kill that season but was only able to put up 3 goals in 45 games.

In his first season with the Jets, Frolik got his scoring touch close to what it was when he posted 21 goals in each of his first two seasons in Florida, as he scored 15 times in 81 games (42 points).

Winnipeg surely had the cap space to get this deal done, but one may wonder why they decided on such a short term. If Frolik were to reach the 20-goal mark next season, expect a team to offer a long term deal closer to 4 million when free agency hits; and if that team is the Jets, they’ll have wished they got him at a cheaper price this offseason.

Born into a family of die-hard football fans, I had to discover hockey on my own. A big reason why the first time I skated onto the ice in full equipment was when I was 18 years old. Now, a year later, with a whopping one career goal under my belt, I'm combining my passion for hockey with writing. I recently finished my second year of a Journalism program at Seneca College, and now I'm thrilled to be a member of the HOHM team.
