Switzerland Blanks Germany at 2015 World Championships

It was one of if not the most intense game of the tournament and when all was said and done the Swiss skated away with a 1-0 victory over their neighbor Germany.

Swiss netminder Leonardo Genoni stopped all 18 shots while German netminder Timo Pielmeier was just one shot less efficient, stopping 17 of 18. However, both goaltenders were named player of the game for their respective teams.

“It was a very important game for us,” said Swiss forward Kevin Romy. “We know with Germany, it’s always a big battle against these guys. The whole team just stayed patient. That was the key word after the second period. We just had to keep playing, keep putting the puck deep, and bringing the puck to the net, and we were going to get a goal. That’s what happened for us.”

The lone goal to help the Swiss pull out the win came from Hollenstein as a result of some pressure off a shoot-in by Kevin Romy, who forced Yannic Seidenberg into giving up the puck. Damien Brunner then fired a perfect pass to Hollenstein who was alone in front. He made a quick move and roofed a backhander over the glove of Timo Pielmeier.

“We just got the puck deep and Romy made some pressure in the corner,” Brunner described. “They came up strong side, and I kind of tried to read it. Denis was all alone. I saw him already before the puck went to me. I just threw it right in front, and he had great patience. It was a really nice goal.”

The Swiss are right back at it, playing another crucial game tomorrow afternoon against Latvia.

I grew up playing Ball and Roller Hockey day and night somewhat religiously throughout elementary and middle school. The two don't compare though when I lace up the skates and hit the ice. I live and breathe hockey beyond the perspective of "it's just a game" and I will gladly talk hockey for hours with anyone. Hockey is more than just a lifestyle, it's a culture of passionate people who make memories every time the puck is dropped. Hockey has not only helped me get through some of the hardest times in life but has created some of the best memories to date. Want to talk hockey with me? Shoot me an email: iburdetskiy@hookedonhockey.com and let's talk some hockey!
