Former Dallas Star Ray Whitney Retires

Former Dallas Star forward Ray Whitney announced on Wednesday (January 21) that he will be retiring.

Whitney’s career has spanned the last 23 years, 22 seasons in total, and has seen him play with many teams across the league. Throughout his career Ray Whitney laced up his skates to play with the San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Carolina Hurricanes, Arizona Coyotes, and his final two seasons with the Dallas Stars. He also managed to pick up a coveted Stanley Cup ring in 2006 with the Hurricanes.

During his career, Whitney played in a total of 1330 NHL games, scoring 385 goals and 679 assists for 1064 points. While with the Stars Whitney scored 20 goals and 41 assists in 101 games.

The Stars did not resign Whitney at the end of the 2013-2014 season and he has spent this season as a free agent, although he felt he could have kept going.

“The legs are still there, but it’s nearly impossible to get the legs moving when you’re over 40 and playing eight to 10 minutes and only on the power play,” Whitney said.
