Jets place Jacob Trouba on Injured Reserve; Another Scary Injury to Jets’ D

Rookie defenceman Jacob Trouba was placed on injured reserve Saturday, with the Winnipeg Jets recalling defenceman Adam Pardy to take his place on their roster.

Trouba injured himself in Winnipeg’s 4-3 shootout victory on Friday. Less than three minutes into the second period, a simple dump-in by teammate Jim Slater ended up in Trouba leaving the ice on a stretcher. As the 19-year old defenseman chased after the puck at the end boards, he missed his bodycheck on Blues defenseman Jordan Leopold, and crashed face first into the boards, with all his momentum. He was wheeled off on a stretcher but managed a wave as fans shouted his name. Trouba later tweeted his thanks for all the support he’d received.

Trouba has a goal and an assist in eight games with the Jets this season, earning a minus-3 rating.

The team said later Trouba never lost consciousness and that he was alert and communicating, even before he was taken to hospital for X-rays and tests.

“Trouba’s still getting evaluated but everything’s good,” Jets coach Claude Noel said after the comeback 4-3 shootout win over the Blues. “He’s got motion and he’s got everything good. I think they’re just running him through some tests to make sure everything’s fine.

“I never really saw the play, but got it through one of the assistants who saw it happen. Then I watched the replay. It was pretty scary. That doesn’t look good. Anytime they want to call out stretchers, it’s never a good moment.”

The incident looked bad to anyone watching from home or in the stands, but it was just as bad for his teammates.

“That was pretty scary,” said left-winger Evander Kane. “I think I was one of the only guys that saw it happen. I was definitely thinking about him throughout the course of the game.

“It was kind of tough to bounce back and get into it pretty quick. Hopefully he’s OK. We got a little bit of good news that he was moving and conscious.”

Only last year, another Jets rookie defenseman, Zach Redmond, suffered a near-fatal laceration to his leg during a Jets practice. It seems lady luck doesn’t favour rookie defenseman in Winnipeg.
