Sabres Score Once, Lose Again

The Buffalo Sabres could manage only one goal against the Ottawa Senators Thursday night.  They have scored 1 goal 11 times this year, part of the reason why they are last in the league.  Bobby Ryan and Zack Smith provided goals for Ottawa’s 2-1 win.

Buffalo was hoping to gain momentum after the 10-round  shootout victory Tuesday night.  Buffalo did some great things, including outshooting the Senators 41-32, 17 of which came in the 3rd period.  They also killed off 3 Ottawa power plays and blocked 16 shots.

Ottawa got on the board about halfway through the 1st period.  Kyle Turris sent a pass to a streaking Bobby Ryan who beat goaltender Ryan Miller to make it 1-0.  Cory Conacher also assisted on the goal.

Buffalo had a great chance in the closing minutes of the opening frame.  Steve Ott found himself all alone on a breakaway with Senators goaltender Craig Anderson.  Anderson got his pad out and stopped Ott.  The Sabres would go on the power play shortly after Zack Smith was called for high-sticking.   Drew Stafford passed to Tyler Ennis who was behind the Ottawa net.  Ennis scored on a wrap-around to tie the game 1-1.  This was Ennis’ 3rd goal in 4 games.

Zack Smith would make up for his penalty.   The John Scott penalty had just expired as Kyle Turris sent a pass to Smith.  Smith ripped one and beat Miller to make it 2-1.  Bobby Ryan also assisted on the play.

Drew Stafford made a heads-up play in the 3rd as he stole a pass from Erik Karlsson.  Stafford was one on one with the goalie.  Alas, just like how things have gone this year for the Sabres, Stafford was stopped by Anderson.

Fast Facts:

Craig Anderson made 40 saves in the victory.

Cory Conacher has points in back-to-back games.

John Scott had 2:42 of ice-time.

Buffalo plays Saturday at home vs. the Calgary Flames.
