Granlund scores three in Finland’s 5-4 shootout win over Switzerland.

Finland got exactly what they needed against Switzerland, a win. Having been rolled over against the Czech Republic (2-1), the Finns sorely needed their 5-4 shootout win against the Swiss. With their win, Finland now has four skaters tied for 14th in WJC points at three. Finland’s chances are looking better as they head into their game on Monday with the undefeated Swedes.

The Swiss went on a 61 second burst where Team Switzerland’s Lino Martschini and Sven Andrighetto both netted goals in the first period before Finland’s Markus Granlund and Teuvo Teravainen tied it up in the second. Both would score again with Granlund’s second goal forcing the overtime.

While Finnish goalkepper Joonas Korpisalo was once again peppered with 19 shots, the Finns unleashed 53 on Swiss goalie, Melvin Nyffeler. The Swiss played an efficient game but the Finn’s simply outshot them. Granlund’s number was called again, the player of the game, as he also won the decision with his shootout winning goal.

The win against Switzerland moved Finland into third, one point behind the Czech Republic in Group A. The Finns can clinch the Group’s top seed with a win and a Czech loss on Monday.
