Deadline Deals: Erat to Washington/Forsberg to Capitals

…Filip Forsberg of course.  Who did you think I was talking about?  Peter?  That could never happen, because that would mean he would have had to change his mind and come out of retirement, and I think we all know, he would never do something like that…

Martin Erat has spent his entire NHL career with one team, the Nashville Predators…well until now.  He had been with the team since 2001.  In his time in “The Music City,” he scored 163 goals and 318 assists for 481 points in 723 career games.

Erat hasn’t been bad this year, having  scored 4 goals and 17 assists.  He also has a -7 rating, playing on a Predators team that has allowed 8 more goals than they’ve scored.

He’s still just 31, with at least a few more years of hockey ahead of him.  He has two years left on his 7-year contract he signed back in2008.  His cap hit is a yearly #4,500,000.

Predators Capitals

Filip Forsberg is a great acquisition for the Predators.  He is an elite prospect, and, according to eliteprospects.com, his stats have been outstanding.

While playing for Leksand of the Allsvenskan league, he has scored 24 goals and 27 assists in 91 games, which is pretty good, considering Allsvenskan is the 2nd-highest league in Sweden.  He was drafted last summer, 11th overall by the Washington Capitals.

The Capitals are hoping that Martin Erat’s play will offset the loss of such a talented prospect.

Washington also received Michael Latta, a tough guy, who was playing for the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL.  Last season, Latta racked up 100 penalty minutes in 51 games.  This season, he has accumulated 184 PIMs in 67 games.  In the two seasons combined, he scored 23 goals and 39 assists.
