Wayne Gretzky Takes a Stand: Bettman Must Give Bobby Orr the Recognition He Deserves

Wayne Gretzky has had a massive impact on the sport.
People pay attention when he speaks because he is one of the greatest players in NHL history.

He recently presented a significant proposal to Gary Bettman.

The Great One made his case for new awards during a segment on TNT’s broadcast last weekend.

Here’s what he had to say:

“We need a Bobby Orr Trophy, for the most points by a defenseman, and then (a trophy) for the best defensive defenseman. Have two awards. You should honor Bobby Orr, him and Gordie Howe, the greatest players ever.”

Orr and Howe, in his opinion, should have trophies named after them because they are the greatest players in NHL history.

The Norris Trophy, which is currently awarded to the best defenseman, recognizes the player who has excelled in all aspects of the game throughout the season.

It makes sense to split the award in two because many players excel as either offensive or defensive defensemen.
They, too, deserve to be recognized.

It remains to be seen whether the NHL will listen to Gretzky’s advice, but as we’ve seen on numerous occasions in recent years, Gary Bettman rarely listens to other people’s ideas when it comes to making changes in HIS league.

I grew up playing Ball and Roller Hockey day and night somewhat religiously throughout elementary and middle school. The two don't compare though when I lace up the skates and hit the ice. I live and breathe hockey beyond the perspective of "it's just a game" and I will gladly talk hockey for hours with anyone. Hockey is more than just a lifestyle, it's a culture of passionate people who make memories every time the puck is dropped. Hockey has not only helped me get through some of the hardest times in life but has created some of the best memories to date. Want to talk hockey with me? Shoot me an email: iburdetskiy@hookedonhockey.com and let's talk some hockey!
