This Day in Hockey History – February 22

A lot going on today in hockey history, including a few feats by the Great One, a crazy week for a pair of brothers, a few Olympic gold medals, and a miracle. February 22, 1981 – Remember the post from two days ago when the Stastny brothers each recorded their first career hat trick in the same game (for the ... Read More »

Whale Watching

ChrisKreider

It hasn’t been the best season for the Connecticut Whale. For a franchise that has only missed the AHL Playoffs once in its existence (1997-98 was their first season), 4th in your division and 12th in the conference isn’t where you want to be around early January. But with the end of the NHL lockout on the horizon, some on ... Read More »

How the Sabres Prospects fared at the World Juniors

JakeMcCabeBufProspect

Jake McCabe (Sabres 2nd rd pick 2012) McCabe was the USA captain at this year’s tournament. From what I could see, he is very smart with the puck. He looks to be a solid player and I am excited to see him in a Sabres uniform down the road. McCabe lead the USA team to a gold medal at the ... Read More »

This morning the United States faced what many consider to be the best Canadian Junior Team in years.  Players such as Edmonton’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Ryan Strome lead the Canadians to a 2-0 start in this tournament, having defeated Germany and Slovakia so far in the preliminary round.  The United States entered the matchup 1-1, having beaten Team ... Team Canada continued to roll Sunday with their third win of the World Juniors, beating possibly their biggest rival Team USA, 2-1. It was a goaltending duel between Canada’s Malcolm Subban and the US’s John Gibson. Canada was playing with only 11 forwards with JC Lipon and Boone Jenner both suspended. Friday morning’s contest against Team Slovakia tested the tenacity, heart, and skill of Team Canada. Touted as an offensive juggernaut, Team Canada entered the game as a heavy favorite. Russia beats USA despite again taking late penalty

UsaRusG1

After what I felt like was a really sloppy game for the Russians (that they should have won in the first 12 minutes) against Slovakia, I expected them to raise their game against the Americans. Russia started off pretty sloppy, earning three icing calls in the first minute and only keeping the game tied with a huge toe save by ... Read More »

Team USA Destroys Team Germany in Game 1

GerUsaG1-1

It’s beginning to look a lot like winter in parts of the northern United States, which means only one thing.  NHL hockey finally?  Not so fast.  Important hockey has just begun, but across the pond, in Ufa Russia.  That’s right, the World Junior Championship has arrived just in time for Christmas and New Years.  *Thank Santa here* The US is ...
