Who to Pick Up – Forwards

Derick Brassard (12.2% – NYR) –

His first game as a New York Ranger after the trade deadline saw him score a goal and three assists in a blowout of the Pittsburgh Penguins.  He now has goals in three straight games.  For the year he has 8 goals and 14 assists in 35 games.  The weird thing now is that the Blue Jackets now look like the more structured team, so I can’t promise an improvement in +/- in this case.

Tyler Bozak (77.9% – TOR) – He wasn’t traded at the trade deadline, and maybe that’s a good thing.  He has 9 points in his last 10 games, including 3 goals.  His ice time has increased from 17-18 minutes per night to 21-22 minutes.  To go along with his 57 shots on net (which isn’t spectacular), he has 49 hits.  For the year he has 10 goals and 13 assists (7 points came on the powerplay) in 37 games.

Brandon Saad (61.1% – CHI) – Saad has 4 goals in his last 3 games (4 points, and a 3 game goal streak).  Playing for the dominant Blackhawks, he has a +/- of +13.  He also has 75 shots on net.  He is starting to shoot the puck more of late.  His ice time varies anywhere from 16-21 minutes per night.

Who to Pick Up – Defensemen

James Wisniewski (64.8% – CLS) –

Wisniewski’s return couldn’t have come at a better time.  The new-look Blue Jackets are doing great right now, and so is he.  In his last 3 games, he has a goal and an assist (8 shots).  He has 38 shots and almost as many hits (34).

Nick Leddy (85.8% – CHI) – Leddy is a +16 on the Blackhawks so far.  He has 4 goals in his last 9 games (including 3 assists in the same stretch).  Some nights he plays an average of up to 19-20 minutes a night, but most nights he plays around 17.

Who to Pick Up – Goalies

Ben Bishop (50.9% – TB) –

The move from Ottawa to TampaBay will greatly benefit Bishop, who would’ve been the third wheel for the Senators with Craig Anderson returning from injured reserve.  I was a little skeptical as to how well he would play with the subpar Lightning defense in front of him.  However, in his first start last night, he recorded a 45 save shutout against the Carolina Hurricanes.  Two starts before that resulted in a 24 save shutout against the New York Rangers.  He will now be starting most nights after Anders Lindback failed to hold down the starters job.  He has also won 5 of his last 6 starts.  With the help of the two recent shutouts, Bishop’s record improved to 9-5 and his SP and GAA improved to .930 and 2.27.  This shows how good Robin Lehner and Anderson have been this season.

Jonathan Bernier (30.5% – LA) – The goalie situation in Los Angeles confuses me greatly.  Jonathan Quick has gone 12-11 with a 2.54 GAA and a .896 SP in 27 starts.  On the other hand, Bernier has gone 9-2 in 10 starts with a 1.77 GAA and a .927 SP.  I understand that Quick’s making the bigger bucks, but Bernier has been lights-out this season.  There’s no reason why Bernier can’t steal more starts here and there with the lackluster play of Quick.  Darryl Sutter may soon realize this and give Bernier the starting job.  Watch out Conn Smythe winner, Steve Mason may in fact have better stats than you by season’s end.(his SP is already better at .899).
