Henrik Zetterberg Ties Ted Lindsay With 335th Goal in Wings’ Victory Over Canes

Detroit set a season-high for blocked shots on Saturday night in a win over the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes came into the night having lost four straight games (3-5-2 in last ten)

The two points put them just five points out of a wild card playoff spot. It remains a near impossibility however, as even more players will be traded come Monday’s trade deadline, and the remainder of the season will likely showcase some younger talent in the system.

Mike Green sat out again due to a neck issue, but it could have just as easily been a way to keep the offensive defenseman uninjured for his pending trade.

Blueliner Danny DeKeyser opened the scoring 15:41 into the first period, assisted by Dylan Larkin and Xavier Ouellet.

Next, a trio of goals were scored in the second period, two from the Red Wings. Noah Hanifan began by tying the game at one, as he roofed a wrist shot off the crossbar of Jimmy Howard as the puck sailed over his left shoulder.

Then Henrik Zetterberg restored the lead just over a minute later, as he redirected a shot from Gustav Nyquist. 2-1. His other countryman, Niklas Kronwall, also assisted on the marker. With the goal, Zetterberg tied Red Wings’ great Ted Lindsay in goals with 335. That’s fifth best in franchise history. After the game the players reflected on the milestone and Lindsay’s monthly visits to the locker room.

Still in the second, Trevor Daley continued the offensive back-end dominance, making it 3-1 with under four to play.

The score would remain 3-1, despite a plethora of power play chances for Detroit in the final frame.

The Red Wings face the Rangers in New York tonight (7:30 ET), before traveling to St. Louis Wednesday (8:00) and Winnipeg on Friday.
