Deadline Deals: David Legwand to Detroit/Patrick Eaves, Calle Jarnkrok, and Pick to Nashville
Veteran forward and lifetime Nasvhille Predator, David Legwand, has been traded to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Patrick Eaves, star prospect Calle Jarnkrok, and a 3rd-Round Pick (becomes 2nd-Round pick if Detroit makes the playoffs this season), who have been bitten by the injury bug once again this season.
Legwand can fill a much needed secondary scoring role with the Wings. He has played 956 career games, scoring 210 goals and 566 points (career: 0.59 PPG).
He is an unrestricted free agent following this season, as his 6-year, $27 million contract comes to an end.
Legwand is a Detroit native who played two seasons with the Plymouth Whalers (OHL) from age 17-18 after playing with Detroit Compuware in 1996-97 (age 16).
He has been a consistent point producer throughout his career. His best statistical season came in 2006-07 when he scored 27 goals and 63 points. He currently has 10 goals and 30 assists in 62 games this season.
However, the price the Red Wings paid to acquire Legwand seems extreme. Montreal was able to acquire star forward Thomas Vanek, arguably the best player available plus a pick, for the same caliber pick Detroit gave (if Detroit makes the playoffs), and a much less impressive prospect. The Red Wings gave all of that plus Patrick Eaves, and their best Griffins prospect. Doesn’t make much sense at all.
Legwand is a rental player for Detroit, unless he agrees to re-sign in the summer, which is not guaranteed. Nashville appears to have robbed the Wings in this deal.
