Breaking News: Henrik Lundqvist to sign with the Washington Capitals

The Capitals are expected to let longtime goaltender Braden Holtby walk this offseason, which would make Ilya Samsonov the starter and create an opening for Henrik Lundqvist.

Lundqvist will have a legitimate shot at capturing his first Stanley Cup with the loaded Capitals, a divisional rival of the Rangers who won it all in 2018 and are well-positioned to capture another title next season. Over the last decade and change, Lundqvist battled Washington in five playoff series, winning three.

“We’re looking for a backup veteran goaltender,” general manager Brian MacLellan said during the draft. “He’s a really solid candidate for us.”

During last night’s Draft Coverage, Bob McKenzie reiterated once again what he stated late yesterday, Henrik Lundqvist will sign with the Capitals. “The logical landing place for Henrik Lundqvist is with the Washington Capitals,” he said. “It’s a good bet that the King ends up in D.C.”

McKenzie did give a “wink” by saying that contracts can’t be signed until Friday after 12pm ET.

It started with what many believed was an innocuous tweet by Henrik Lundqvist. A closer look revealed a key and it was the last line, “I still want to WIN!” The King put the last word in all caps, which is by the way the Capitals official Twitter hashtag #ALLCAPS. Nice touch Hank!

As soon as this message hit the internet, everyone from Pierre Lebrun to Linda Cohn chimed in with one common team, the Washington Capitals. Keep your eyes on this one.

I grew up playing Ball and Roller Hockey day and night somewhat religiously throughout elementary and middle school. The two don't compare though when I lace up the skates and hit the ice. I live and breathe hockey beyond the perspective of "it's just a game" and I will gladly talk hockey for hours with anyone. Hockey is more than just a lifestyle, it's a culture of passionate people who make memories every time the puck is dropped. Hockey has not only helped me get through some of the hardest times in life but has created some of the best memories to date. Want to talk hockey with me? Shoot me an email: iburdetskiy@hookedonhockey.com and let's talk some hockey!
