5 Players from 2018 Canadian junior hockey team to face significant assault charges

There will be five Canadian World Junior players charged with sexual assault.

Following several investigations into the case over the course of the last five years, the players have apparently been instructed to turn themselves in to police in London, Ontario. The accusation of sexual assault that occurred following a Hockey Canada banquet in London honoring the team’s gold medal is the basis for the ongoing allegations. In the early hours of June 19, 2018, a woman claims that she was raped by a bunch of hockey players in a hotel room.

In June 2018, investigations into the alleged sexual assault were launched by Hockey Canada and London police, through the use of a third-party agency. Hockey Canada concluded its investigation in 2020, while London police terminated their criminal investigation in 2019.

The woman filed a complaint in April 2022, requesting $3.55 million in damages from Hockey Canada, the body in charge of junior hockey in Canada, and eight anonymous players from the country’s 2018 World Junior squad. TSN said in May of that year that Hockey Canada and the woman had reached an out-of-court settlement. In July 2022, the London police resumed their investigation into the sexual assault claims of members of Hockey Canada, in response to public outcry.

Since a large number of the players from the World Junior squad are already NHL players, the league later launched its own investigation into what happened that evening. Although it was launched in May 2022, the inquiry has been ongoing with no significant changes.

I grew up playing Ball and Roller Hockey day and night somewhat religiously throughout elementary and middle school. The two don't compare though when I lace up the skates and hit the ice. I live and breathe hockey beyond the perspective of "it's just a game" and I will gladly talk hockey for hours with anyone. Hockey is more than just a lifestyle, it's a culture of passionate people who make memories every time the puck is dropped. Hockey has not only helped me get through some of the hardest times in life but has created some of the best memories to date. Want to talk hockey with me? Shoot me an email: iburdetskiy@hookedonhockey.com and let's talk some hockey!
