Hockey Fans Rejoice: NHLPA Discusses Plans to Increase Salary Cap for 2023-2024 NHL Season

The NHL and NHLPA were expecting one of the largest salary cap increases in the cap era prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, the pandemic and the NHL’s handling of it resulted in significant revenue decreases, which eventually resulted in the league’s flat cap. The NHL has stated that they are willing to collaborate with the NHLPA in exchange for something in return.

The NHLPA recently announced the appointment of Marty Walsh as its new Executive Director, succeeding Donald Fehr. Walsh held his first press conference today, where he discussed how the NHLPA feels about working toward a salary cap increase.

At his introductory media conference, new NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh says players are “open to any conversation» about raising the salary cap, but are «not open to changing escrow.” Currently, escrow is capped at 6 per cent the next three seasons.

This is a significant departure from Don Fehr’s existing approaches.
During previous negotiations, it was frequently noted that the players regularly felt that Fehr’s best interests were not always served. During negotiations, it appeared that the players made all of the concessions.

It will be interesting to see how Walsh progresses. Are the players truly willing to accept only a $1,000,000 increase in the cap? Or will the parties be able to reach an agreement?

I grew up playing Ball and Roller Hockey day and night somewhat religiously throughout elementary and middle school. The two don't compare though when I lace up the skates and hit the ice. I live and breathe hockey beyond the perspective of "it's just a game" and I will gladly talk hockey for hours with anyone. Hockey is more than just a lifestyle, it's a culture of passionate people who make memories every time the puck is dropped. Hockey has not only helped me get through some of the hardest times in life but has created some of the best memories to date. Want to talk hockey with me? Shoot me an email: iburdetskiy@hookedonhockey.com and let's talk some hockey!
