Auston Matthews Makes Maple Leafs History: Ties Record Set 30 Years Ago

The Toronto Maple Leafs were defeated by the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night, falling 5-3, but it wasn’t due to a lack of effort from number 34.

In a losing effort, Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews managed to tie a single-game franchise record for shots on goal by recording a whopping 15 shots on goal over three periods of play. To think, if the Maple Leafs had forced overtime in this game, Matthews would almost certainly have claimed the record for himself.

Matthews now joins NHL legend Dave Andreychuk, who set the record almost exactly 30 years ago on March 23, 1993, against the Winnipeg Jets.

I grew up playing Ball and Roller Hockey day and night somewhat religiously throughout elementary and middle school. The two don't compare though when I lace up the skates and hit the ice. I live and breathe hockey beyond the perspective of "it's just a game" and I will gladly talk hockey for hours with anyone. Hockey is more than just a lifestyle, it's a culture of passionate people who make memories every time the puck is dropped. Hockey has not only helped me get through some of the hardest times in life but has created some of the best memories to date. Want to talk hockey with me? Shoot me an email: iburdetskiy@hookedonhockey.com and let's talk some hockey!
