Deadline Deals: Jaroslav Halak, Draft Pick to Washington/Michal Neuvirth, Rostislav Klesla to Buffalo

In yet another goalie swap, the Buffalo Sabres flip Jaroslav Halak (acquired from the St. Louis Blues last week) before he plays a game with them. He joins a Capitals team that is desperate for a permanent solution in net.

Meanwhile, Capitals starter slash backup slash backup to the backup has finally had his wish granted, albeit probably not to the team he wanted to land on. Neuvirth has long been desiring a ticket out of Washington, and he will likely be making up for his lack of work in D.C. with a few games of 50+ shots per night in Buffalo.

Halak went 24-9-4 with a .917 SP and 2.23 GAA this season with St. Louis, while Neuvirth went 4-6-2 in only 13 starts with a SP of .914 and GAA of 2.82.

The former is in the last year of his 4-year, $15 million contract, while the latter has one remaining year at a cap hit of $2.5 million.

It’s a great trade for both sides. Halak has a chance at making the playoffs, while Neuvirth will be able to play games, albeit possibly with a bag over his head.
