Sharks Chew Out a Win: Shootout Style

I was planning on keeping this game recap between the Sharks and Vancouver Canucks simple. The only problem was it was too exciting of a game to stay simple, so let’s dive in.

The first period was somewhat uneventful, so let’s start things off on a good note. 7:42 into the first period, Scott Gomez lit the lamp for the Sharks. Simple right? Just a routine goal for Mr. Gomez. WRONG!!! This was Gomez’s first goal since February 17, 2012. Talk about getting of the schneid. The rest of the period consisted with back and forth hockey with a lot of shots being put on net. Antti Niemi, by far the Sharks MVP so far this season, came up big by stopping all 17 shots thrown his way.

Second period was another fun one. Almost five minutes into the period, Adam Burish scored the Sharks first shorthanded goal of the season, and it was a beauty.  Later that period, at around 13:23, Canucks captain Henrik Sedin put one past Niemi, cutting the lead to one. It was a shot that the Sharks goaltender had no chance of stopping. Then with just 25 seconds left in the period, Jannik Hansen tied the game on another unstoppable shot. The rest of the period ran out, and to the third we went. The third did not have much to talk about. A couple things to point out. 1)Brad Stuart was the lucky recipient of a stick to the face causing one tooth to fall out and another tooth to chip off a little. He got up right after that and went to block a shot. True hockey player right there. 2)Corey Schneider and Antti Niemi played excellent hockey the whole game and it did not change this period.

Now here is something i’m sure you guys have never seen before: Sharks headed to overtime.

Overtime went by very quickly. Part of the reason was a bogus interference penalty on Scott Gomez, sending him to the box for two minutes. Luckily the Sharks managed to kill it off. Another scary moment occurred as a slap shot deflected up and hit Henrik Sedin in the visor. After a dramatic tumble, he got back up and skated away unscathed.

Deja vu happens more and more now as the Sharks would go to a shootout…again. Goals in the shootout came from Logan Couture (SJ), Chris Higgins (VAN), and the winning SO goal went to Joe Pavelski of the Sharks. So after that not too simple game…THE SHARKS WON!

The Sharks were scheduled to fly out to Calgary for the second part of their back to back right after the Vancouver game, but due to low visibility in Calgary, San Jose was forced to stay the night.

GAME NOTES: Todd McLellan is now tied with Ron Wilson for first in the wins category as a coach in the Sharks franchise. Scott Gomez and Adam Burish both got their first goals of the season. Ryane Clowe is still sitting at no goals for the season, and Patrick Marleau is stuck at 399 career goals.
