Russia Beats Latvia To Stay Undefeated In 2014 Ice Hockey World Championship

Russia poured on double digits in shots through all three periods and cruised to a 4-1 victory over Latvia in their fifth game of the tournament. For Latvia it was just too much to handle as power house Russia stayed undefeated and still holds the top spot in Group B standings.

Through five games Russia has now outscored their opponents a whopping 26-6. Even allowing the first goal of the game to Latvia didn’t put any doubt into  their heads as Russia rallied with three goals of their own in the first and another in the second to secure the victory.

At this pace Russia looks to be one of the favorites along with Sweden to make it into medal game contention. With a win in their next match the Russians can clinch out Group B. However a possible regulation loss and a Belarus regulation win over Latvia on Monday would set up quite a Tuesday showdown between Belarus and Russia for first place.

It’s all speculation and Russia should have no trouble knocking off Germany but upsets have been the trending topic of this year’s tournament. Evgeni Malkin will be joining Russia for their last two games of the preliminary round which can only mean opponents should expect more headaches to come.

I grew up playing Ball and Roller Hockey day and night somewhat religiously throughout elementary and middle school. The two don't compare though when I lace up the skates and hit the ice. I live and breathe hockey beyond the perspective of "it's just a game" and I will gladly talk hockey for hours with anyone. Hockey is more than just a lifestyle, it's a culture of passionate people who make memories every time the puck is dropped. Hockey has not only helped me get through some of the hardest times in life but has created some of the best memories to date. Want to talk hockey with me? Shoot me an email: iburdetskiy@hookedonhockey.com and let's talk some hockey!
