Red Wings Drop 6th Straight, Fall 6-3 to Habs

Detroit dropped their 6th straight game at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens, this time by a score of 6-3.

It was a strong start for Detroit, as they led 2-1 after the first period. Following a Brendan Gallagher deflection goal (shot by Max Pacioretty), Anthony Mantha (from a difficult angle) and Tomas Tatar (on the power play) scored for the Red Wings. The latter was the result of a great passing play, from which Tatar roofed a snap shot top shelf. Detroit led in shots 13-6 after 20 minutes.

In the second period, however, it all fell apart for the struggling Wings.

Early in the middle frame, Charles Hudon evened the score after a flurry of Habs shots directed at goalie Jimmy Howard. 43 seconds later, Andrew Shaw made it 3-2 after he roofed a goal top shelf on a mini-breakaway opportunity.

Still in the second, Alex Galchenyuk padded the lead to 4-2 with help from Jacob De La Rose.

Near the midway mark of the third, a Jeff Petry shot was deflected by Brendan Gallagher for yet another such goal. Late in the period, Petry added another assist, as his shot rebound was jammed past Howard by Pacioretty (it was actually Detroit defenseman Jonathan Ericsson).

Frans Nielsen managed to score on the power play with 2:30 left. It was an impressive play, as he scored while falling backward.

Even the Detroit penalty kill was uncharacteristically bad on the night, as they allowed two goals.

Montreal moved past Detroit, taking the third spot in the Atlantic Division. Detroit sits fifth with 25 points.

The Wings have now won 4 of 13 games at home and 6 of 13 on the road.
